ZIP code data now includes demographics for better understanding of communities with lower vaccination rates
PHOENIX (June 16, 2021)—Maricopa County has now added demographic detail to their ZIP code-level vaccination data. This will help the county and its partners identify in finer detail which communities have experienced potential barriers to getting vaccinated so that vaccine events can be tailored to people’s needs.
The updated data, available at Maricopa.gov/COVID19VaccineData, now has vaccination data across ZIP codes stratified by demographics including sex, age group, race and ethnicity. These data are reported in aggregate across each ZIP code.
“Maricopa County is so large and diverse, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach that will provide COVID-19 vaccine to everyone who wants it,” said Dr. Rebecca Sunenshine, medical director for disease control at Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH). “With this level of data, we can see more clearly who may still be facing challenges in getting vaccinated. Knowing that information means we can more effectively tailor our vaccine events and messaging to support those community members.”
Some vaccination trends, such as older adults being more likely to be vaccinated than younger populations and females being more likely to be vaccinated than males, are consistent across the county. It’s important to recognize that about 50% of ethnicity data are unknown, which is common in this type of data, but means these numbers may not be representative of the entire ZIP code.
Maricopa County’s goal is to make COVID-19 vaccine available to everyone who wants it, wherever they live in the county. A new promotional campaign aims to answer questions for those who are on the fence, encouraging them to get the facts then get the shot.
Events are planned so that vaccines are:
- Available in convenient locations and times
- Provided in a safe, trusted environment
- Easy to sign up for
- Culturally relevant with information in many languages
- Accessible for people with a variety of functional needs
Vaccine events, including pop-up community events, are listed at Maricopa.gov/COVID19VaccineLocations. Residents can also sign up for email notifications about pop-up events that are coming to their area. These events occur at different locations, days and times to make it convenient for people with varying schedules and needs.
Vaccine data, including the new demographic data, are updated every Wednesday around noon.
